There are plenty of 9mm carbines out there that perform wonderfully, all that I know of are blow-back actions. The blow-back action requires a much heavier reciprocating mass to keep the bolt closed long enough to allow safe opening. The beauty of the M1 carbine action is that it is gas operated and operates under the principal of a locked breech.
