It is a thumping noise and it is supposedly caused by the fanbelt. On the 2020 there are two belts now and the fan is by itself. GMTECH link has a small description on the problem but no resolution.I know it’s an old thread, but the L5P in the 2020 is the noisiest, most unpleasant Duramax to date. The thumping, ticking, screeching, and what I’m assuming is injector knock, is almost Unbearable. Been in 3 different 2020’s and besides when mine melted down a dpf, I’ve yet to hear a quieter Dmax from factory.

These new diesels are so quiet now that you can hear all the weird stuff that has always made noise but was drowned out by engine rattle. New Ride: 2020 GMC 2500 CCLB DMAX. It only seems to happen between 1,000 and 1500 rpm. My 16 LML made a similar noise sometimes, but this L5P seems to do it more. It's not the typewriter tick, that's for sure.

I put in the diesel fuel supplement in the grey bottle according mixture on the bottles directions to raise cetane level and lube injector pump and injectors. in one treatment ticking was gone and real noticeable power improvement. worked real well!!
