Yes you will have to title and register the vehicle in your home state. That means paying all the dmv fees and sales tax out if pocket. Also carmax's return policy can only be fulfilled at the store you purchased it from. I would recommend just transferring it.
That I purchased the car and then three months later the registration is expiring. I was under the impression they were registering my car and I wouldn't need to renew for a year. I checked the bill of sale and the only line item I can find that relates to registration is an 'Electronic Reg/Transfer Charge' of $29.00.
