The base companions have good storytelling, but mercs are great for fighting. Optimized Mercs are mechanically superior to most of the companions. Jubilost is super fun and is stronger than any merc you can do. General assessment of companions as being sub-optimal is rather flawed in general. It says something that when 3/4 of the starting companions are female it feels "forced," but when most of the early companions are male, no one says a thing (examples: the first 4 companions in Pillars of Eternity are all male. Of the first 4 non-dlc companions you can choose to recruit in Mass Effect 2, only one is female. Both are amazing games).
