Start small. While base building is so enticing, early game it can be cumbersome to even attempt staying at said base due to regular "less than kind" visits. Live in a town for a couple weeks in-game, learn which groups kill, and which just knock you out. Food, pretty easy to manage with a small group. Carry a body for double xp. Mining and stealing seem to be the best early game money making methods. Mine near town then run into town if your attacked and let them fight the town then pick up the bandits and use them as backpacks to hold more ore with and to slowly train strength, combat skills and first aid.
