My suggestion would be to visit the browning site . 1st you should be able to find the date of manufacture and perhaps determine a model . 2nd you can download the manual .read it cover to cover .from there you should be able to disassemble the gun and diagnose the problem .

I got the gun for a song because it never functioned correctly. I bought a A5 in 2013. The first time I hunted with it the bolt latch would not release a shell from the magazine to be loaded into the chamber consistently using 2 3/4 inch shells from various manufactures. Now it will load and fire first shot but once second shot is loaded into chamber, I cant even pull the trigger without switching the saftey on and themn back off. It sounds as though you may want to replace the recoil spring that fits around the magazine tube. Purchase a Grace A5 screwdriver set then remove the stock & replace the recoil spring inside the small tube. Once I take the a5 out I can run about 25 shells through it with no problems. After this usually it fails to eject about every two shots, then gets to the point where every shot fails and you have to eject the shells manually. Mine does like the Federals and reloads at a solid 1200 fps. Shot it for a year as is, and shot it extremely well one of the best handling guns I own.
