Unit for unit they're better than infantry and archers but they're a huge pain in the ass to train up. Instead of training say 30 elite cataphracts you'd have a much easier (& cheaper) time training 100 legionnaires, and they'd be more effective too. In Warband it's easy to mass produce elite cavalry units. Not so much in Bannerlord.
