From what I understand, the relic weapon at 50 is upgraded from ilvl 80 to 100, when it then becomes classed as a zodiac weapon. It is then upgradeable to ilvl 135. It's not used when starting the new zodiac weapon in the following expansion. I believe you can get replica versions if you can complete a zodiac weapon, allowing for glamour.
