The .44 mag has a lot more energy. That matters with Grizzly Bears and large Black Bears. If you are on the east coast, it won't matter so much and even a .45 ACP with +P and Ball Ammo should do for that. The benefit of a 10mm is that you are going to get several more rounds assuming the charging bear is slow.
